(Reticulum :
Latin) அமைப்பு. [The name Endoplasmic Reticulum is derived from its characteristics:
Endoplasmic signifies that it is located within the cell, specifically
within the cytoplasm. Reticulum describes its network-like structure,
composed of interconnected tubules and sacs.]
(Tubules)
[The Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) is a membrane-bound organelle within
eukaryotic cells consisting of a network of tubules and flattened sacs
known as cisternae. These tubules and sacs are responsible for various
essential cellular functions.]
Smooth ER
The
Rough ER earns its name due to its rough appearance, which results from
the presence of ribosomes studding its surface. Its primary function
revolves around protein synthesis. Ribosomes on the Rough ER synthesize
proteins that may either be secreted from the cell or integrated into
cell membranes. Additionally, this organelle plays a vital role in
protein modification, ensuring that newly synthesized proteins are
correctly folded and may undergo post-translational modifications, like
glycosylation
NEET : Which type of Endoplasmic Reticulum is primarily involved in
protein synthesis, and what is the key structural difference that gives
it its name?
a) Rough ER; Ribosomes on its surface
b) Smooth ER; Presence of lipid bilayers
c) Rough ER; Presence of lipid bilayers
d) Smooth ER; Ribosomes on its surface
Answer: a) Rough ER; Ribosomes on its surface
(Smooth ER
Smooth ER lacks ribosomes, giving it a smooth appearance. Its functions
encompass lipid synthesis, detoxification of drugs and toxins
(especially in the liver), and the storage of calcium ions essential for
various cellular processes. In summary, while the Rough ER specializes
in protein-related activities, the Smooth ER primarily focuses on lipid
synthesis, detoxification, and calcium storage, collectively
contributing to the proper functioning of eukaryotic cells. ]
NEET : What is the main function of the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
(Smooth ER) in liver cells, and how does it achieve this function?
a) Protein synthesis by ribosomes
b) Lipid synthesis and detoxification; Enzymatic reactions
c) Carbohydrate metabolism; Storage of glucose
d) DNA replication; Chromosome organization
Answer: b) Lipid synthesis and detoxification; Enzymatic reactions
NEET : In certain liver diseases, the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
(Smooth ER) can become overwhelmed and less efficient at detoxifying
drugs and toxins. What is the term for this condition, and how might it
affect an individual's health?
a) ER Overload; Improved drug metabolism
b) ER Overdrive; Decreased drug metabolism
c) ER Stress; Increased drug tolerance
d) ER Boost; Enhanced drug excretion
Answer: c) ER Stress; Increased drug tolerance
